Prophecy of Jerusalem's Fall
Jesus predicted the destruction of Jerusalem nearly 40 years before the Romans besieged the city (Luke 19:43-44). He advised listeners to leave Jerusalem when they saw signs that it would be destroyed (Matthew 24:15-22, Luke 21:20-24).
The Romans destroyed Jerusalem in A.D. 70, following a three-year campaign. While Jerusalem was under siege, a Roman general named Cestius Gallus unexpectedly recalled his soldiers in A.D. 68, enabling those familiar with Christ’s prophecy to flee.
When Jerusalem was captured, Titus leveled the temple, and the city. Josephus wrote that Jerusalem was "demolished to the very foundations", as Jesus had predicted (Luke 21:6).
