Luke 22

« Back | Next »

Luke 22 presents Jesus in the upper room and in the Garden of Gethsemany. The chapter closes with the Jewish trials before Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin.

Annas the High Priest

Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the High Priest (John 18:13). Prior to Roman occupation, the position of High Priest was a lifetime appointment. The Roman governor Valerius Gratus deposed Annas in 15 A.D., appointing Caiaphas as High Priest.

Although deposed, Annas was very rich and influential. Annas profited from the money-changers and animal traders that provoked Jesus to cleanse the temple.

Caiaphas the High Priest

Caiaphas conspired to kill Jesus, and prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation (Matthew 26:3-4, John 11:47-53, 18:14). Jesus was tried in Caiaphas' house (Matthew 26:57-58).

Caiaphas charged Jesus with blasphemy (Matthew 26:62-67), and delivered Jesus to Pilate for sedition (Luke 23:1-2).

The Roman governor of Syria deposed Caiaphas in 37 A.D., replacing him with Jonathan, a son of Annas. In 1990 the ossuary of Caiaphas was discovered two miles south of Jerusalem.
