In Luke 24 Jesus is resurrected. Luke recorded the appearance of Jesus to many people. Luke 24 closes with the ascension of Jesus into Heaven.

The Road to Emmaus

Jesus appeared to 2 travelers on the road to Emmaus, a town located about 7 miles northwest of Jerusalem. They did not initially recognize Jesus (Luke 24:16).

While they were walking to Emmaus, Jesus explained to them "the things concerning himself in all the scriptures" (Luke 24:27).

Later that evening, when they were about to eat, the travelers recognized Jesus when he blessed and broke the bread (Luke 24:28-35).

Resurrection Appearances

After he was resurrected, Jesus appeared to over 500 hundred people at various times over a period of 40 days (Acts 1:3). The approximate sequence of the appearances is below.

Appearances before Jesus ascended to the Father

  • Mary Magdaline – Mark 16:9, John 20:14-17
  • Other women – Matthew 28:9-10
  • Two men on road to Emmaus – Mark 16:12-13, Luke 24:13-32
  • Simon Peter – 1st Corinthians 15:5, Luke 24:34
  • 10 Apostles in Jerusalem – Luke 24:36-46, John 20:19-24.
  • 11 Apostles (with Thomas) - Mark 16:14, John 20:26-29
  • 7 Disciples by the sea – John 21:1-14
  • 500 Believers – 1st Corinthians 15:6
  • James – 1st Corinthians 15:7
  • To disciples on a mountain in Galilee. Here Jesus delivered the great commission. – Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-18.
  • To disciples on the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem. Jesus ascended to the Father after this appearance. – Luke 24:44-49, Acts 1:3-8, 1st Corinthians 15:7.
